Wei Chen was elected as a member of Chinese Academy of Engineering

On November 22, the Chinese Academy of Engineering announced the list of new members to be elected in 2019. Major general Wei Chen, the alumni of College of Chemical and Biological Engineering of Zhejiang University, was elected as a member of Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Wei Chen, born in 1966, graduated from Department of Chemical Engineering of Zhejiang University in 1988. At present, she is the director of Bioengineering Research Institute of Academy of Military Medical Sciences of Academy of Military Sciences PLA China, and a major general of professional technology.

She has won the 14th Ten Outstanding Young Persons of China, the second Top Ten Science and Technology News Figures of China, the advanced individual in the army's SARS prevention and control work, the Eighth China Young Female Scientist Award, the 2015 Top Ten Science and Technology Innovation Figures, the 2015 China Science News figures of the year, and the 2017 Science and Technology Progress Award of He Liang-He Li Foundation ward.

Over the years, she has been engaged in biological defense research, and has taken the lead in undertaking a number of major national and military research projects. During the outbreak of SARS, the research team led by Wei Chen first confirmed that IFN - ω could effectively inhibit the replication of SARS virus, and completed the clinical research of nearly 14000 medical and nursing staff in more than 30 SARS designated hospitals. The results showed that the use of IFN - ω played an important role in preventing the infection of front-line medical and nursing staff. The research achievements have reached the international advanced level, and won the first prize of Scientific and Technological Progress of the Army.
