From September 26 to September 27, 25 undergraduates, 10 masters and 8 doctoral students from the College of Chemical and Biological Engineering of Zhejiang University (“ZJU CBE”) were organized and led by teachers Yang Bin, Hou Yang and Qian Liguang, participated in the Frontiers in Chemical and Biological Engineering Virtual Course 2020 online course and admissions presentation project held by Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (“HKUST”).

I.General Introduction

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, referred to as Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, is a top research university in Asia and internationally renowned. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has a deep background in chemical engineering. In the 2020 QS Global University Rankings, the chemical engineering of HKUST ranks 2nd in China and 32nd in the world.

Although this course only last for two days, we have harvested a wealth of professional knowledge learning and cross-cultural exchange results. Under the careful arrangement of Professor Minhua Shao from the Department of Chemistry and Bioengineering of HKUST, this course was taught by 12 well-known professors of the Department of Chemistry and Bioengineering of HKUST. The course is based on the research fields of each professor and the cultural heritage of HKUST. It brought us wonderful courses in a short time.

II.Course Content

On the morning of the 26th, Professor I-Ming Hsing, Director of the Department of Chemistry and Biological Engineering of HKUST, gave us a short welcome speech. Then, Professor Minhua Shao introduced us to HKUST’s master’s courses and gave a brief and brief talk on electrochemical energy technology. Deep introduction.

After the course is over, students take the initiative to ask questions and discuss and communicate with the teacher. After a short break, Professor Furong Gao gave a lecture on the research and technology of batch process automation and smart factory. Finally, the whole morning of study was ended with Professor Richard Lakerveld's explanation of computing tool drug crystallization.

Professor Ping Gao introduced the cutting-edge technology of high-performance materials, designed super-strong polymer nano-films through topology and conformational operations, and applied the technology in industrial production, and introduced us the method of combining experimental science and industrial production.

Professor Zhengtang Luo gave us a brief introduction to HKUST’s research-oriented master’s program, and then gave a lecture on the synthesis and application of graphene and two-dimensional materials, which are now widely concerned by the society. He answered many of our questions and deepened our understanding of materials. Scientific research and understanding of the field of graphene research. Finally, Professor Yoonseob Kim taught us about polymer design for water purification and clean energy power generation, and also gave a brief introduction to chemical research in environmental protection.

On the second day, Professor Angela Wu first introduced us to the quantitative systems biology platform technology, and then Professor Becki Yi Kuang talked about the application of induced pluripotent stem cells and chemical engineering. After the break, Professor Fei Sun introduced the new material engineering biology. Content, let us have more understanding of bioengineering.

Mr. Frank Lam introduced to us his research field-photocatalytic wastewater treatment technology. Photocatalysis is a promising sustainable development technology in the future. After the teacher introduced the project overview, he explained to us how to conduct further research in material design, reaction mechanism research and photoreactor design. Industrialize the technology. Finally, the teacher mentioned that the design and improvement of photocatalysts that efficiently separate electron-hole pairs are still a big challenge, and we encourage us to explore further.

Teacher Terence T.W. Wong took us to experience his scientific research journey gradually expanding from basic research to translational medicine, allowing us to get in touch with the frontiers of technology in the cloud. Teacher Marshal LIU is humorous and approachable. He used vivid chemical product cases to develop a close connection between chemical industry and life, from the beer industry in Hong Kong to various cleaning products on the market, from the self-heating rice package. In the summer, the portable air conditioner, which will automatically cool down, draws a successful conclusion to this online study visit in the laughter.

III.Harvest and Experience

With the joint efforts of teachers and students, this online communication came to a successful conclusion. Affected by the epidemic, this communication took the form of online, but even if the teacher and the students were separated by thousands of miles, the enthusiasm for the exchange and spread of knowledge was not affected at all. Although the exchange study time is short, the wonderful lectures given by the professors of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology have benefited us a lot. The students listened carefully to the lectures in two days and actively participated in online discussions. The clash of cultures and the friction of thinking gave us not only professional knowledge but also academic culture. Although the course is over, the impact it brings to us will never stop here. We will use this exchange as a bridge and continue to move forward in our learning and research careers.
