In 1927, Prof. Shou-heng Li, a true pioneer in chemical engineering education, established a separate chemical engineering department at Zhejiang University, making it the first of its kind in the country. Since then, Chemical Engineering at ZJU's has remained one of China's top engineering programs providing excellence in education and research. As the oldest Chemical Engineering program in the country, it has seen many changes over its lifetime. In its more than 90 years of existence, ZJU has experienced the lows of wars and economic calamity and China's rise in the world. Through it all, the program has found a way not only to survive but to thrive.

The program recently expanded its core program into six institutes and changed its name to the College of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Zhejiang University (ZJU CBE) to reflect its expanding size and interests. The list of institutes includes Chemical Engineering, Chemical Reaction Engineering, Polymer and Polymerization Engineering, Bioengineering, Pharmaceutical Engineering, and Industrial Ecology and Environment. These provide world-class education and research opportunities attracting the best and brightest students from China and worldwide. The College's mission is to provide science and engineering talent to develop China's chemical and related industries, further supporting the national economy's long-term development.
