February 23rd, 2024 — A delegation of 12 undergraduate and 2 postgraduate students from College of Chemical and Biological Engineering(CBE) at Zhejiang University returned from a 5-days study tour to Japan, where they visited two of the country's most prestigious universities: the University of Tokyo and Chiba University. Led by Doctor HUANG Zhengliang and WANG Angran, planned by Ms. ZHOU Guangzhao, the trip marked the first students exchange to Japan organized by the college, aimed at fostering relationships and sharing knowledge with top Japanese universities.

Renowned worldwide for its Chemical Engineering research, the university showcased its advanced facilities, groundbreaking achievements, and close industry collaborations. Fields such as materials science, biochemical engineering, environmental engineering, and energy technology were particularly highlighted.

Upon arrival, the delegation was greeted by Assistant Professor Hu Peidong from the Chemical System Engineering Department's Wakihara Laboratory. He conducted a guided campus tour, providing insights into the university's rich history and development.

Later, a seminar was held between the two parties, offering a platform for students and teachers to share ideas and experiences. During the seminar, the delegation was warmly welcomed by Professor Wakihara, who heads a research lab specializing in molecular sieves. Professor Wakihara provided a detailed overview of the lab's research fields, highlighting the significance of their work in Nanomaterials and Technology. The delegation actively participated in the discussion, posing questions and sharing their own insights on research, learning, and life at the University of Tokyo.

The equipment, including preparation devices and characterization instruments, reflected the lab's commitment to innovation and excellence. On February 22nd, the delegation traveled to Chiba University, another prestigious institution in Japan. There, they engaged in productive discussions with professors and scholars from the Takei Laboratory, a leading research group in Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) technology.

Dr. GAO Zengfeng, a leading expert in the field of Chemical Engineering from Chiba Univeristiy, led students and researchers to gain insights into the latest advancements in EIT technology. The delegation was given a tour of the laboratory, where they were introduced to the state-of-the-art equipment used for EIT research. Dr. GAO highlighted the non-invasive improvements made by the research team to overcome the limitations of traditional EIT technology. He also provided a brief overview of the mathematical and physical principles underlying EIT, and demonstrated the impressive results achieved by the laboratory's innovative application of this technology in convolutional neural networks.The session was a valuable opportunity for both parties to learn from each other and strengthen their academic collaborations.
