2024 SDG Global Summer School Chemical Engineering Module Concludes

On July 22, Zhejiang University inaugurated 2024 SDG Global Summer School, featuring the "Fundamentals and Frontiers of Chemical Engineering" course offered by College of Chemical and Biological Engineering. The course marked the beginning of an enriching two-week journey for eight students from prestigious institutions including Université Paris-Saclay, the University of Sydney, and Ghent University.


Part 1: Acclaim for Exceptional Coursework

The curriculum, crafted by ten professors with international experience and a command of English, received high praise. It spanned fundamental chemical engineering principles, experimental techniques, and cutting-edge advancements. Notable courses included "Unit Operations in Chemical Engineering" by Professors GAO Xiang and YAO Zhen, "Transport Phenomena" by Professor ZHAO Junjie, and "Opportunities of Artificial Intelligence in Chemical Engineering" by Professor MO Yiming, among others. Students commended the professors' amiable demeanor, fluent English, and engaging teaching methods, which left a lasting impression.


Part 2: Gaining Insights into China's Chemical Industry

On August 2, students were given a behind-the-scenes look at Transfar Group, a pacesetter in China's chemical sector, and Hangzhou First Applied Material Co., Ltd., a leading manufacturer of EVA photovoltaic film. Company tours and Q&A sessions offered students a deeper understanding of the industry's operations and global reach. They also had the privilege of interacting with Mr. Chen Bajin, the Chief Scientific Officer of Transfar Group, and Mr. Qu Lianwen, HR Director of Hangzhou First Applied Material Co., Ltd., who shared valuable career insights.

Part 3: Immersion in Chinese Culture and Enriching Extracurriculars

Beyond academics, students engaged in a spectrum of cultural and recreational activities. These included a tea ceremony workshop, sports events, museum visits, and a tour of the iconic West Lake. The tea ceremony, a hallmark of Chinese elegance, was a highlight. On August 3, under the guidance of a tea master, students delved into the art of tea preparation, experiencing the serenity and artistry of this ancient tradition.


On July 28, the group visited the Zhejiang Museum for an exploration of local history and culture, followed by a scenic tour of West Lake. These activities fostered camaraderie among students, promoting mutual understanding and cultural exchange, while enhancing the international perspective of Zhejiang University's students.


Part 4: Final Presentation

The summer school culminated on August 4 with a final presentation by the students, followed by a graduation ceremony. Professor YANG Xuan and Course Coordinator Ms. ZHOU Guangzhao awarded the certificates, marking the end of a fruitful program.

Student Q&A:

Q: What is the most challenging thing for you?

Alban: The most challenging aspect for me has been participating in this experience. Initially, I believed there was a cultural barrier between people, but I was mistaken; there isn’t one. It has been a significant step for me to push beyond my comfort zone, to meet different people, and to try different foods. In fact, I’ve found the foods are quite enjoyable.


Q: And what is the most rewarding thing for you?

Alban: The most rewarding aspect has been the people I've met. Every person I met was lovely, and I am grateful for them. Although my major is Physics, I was fortunate enough to understand the concepts taught in the Chemical Engineering class. I am proud of my comprehension and appreciate the excellent teaching provided by the college. It has been a rewarding experience indeed.

The summer school's conclusion marks the beginning of a new chapter for the students, equipped with a deeper understanding of chemical engineering and a broader worldview.
