1. State Key Laboratory of Chemical Engineering at Zhejiang University

The State Key Laboratory of Chemical Engineering was established in 1987 by the Chinese Ministry of Education(MOE) and Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). The laboratory is divided into four branches, which are physically located at four universities: Zhejiang University, Tsinghua University, Tianjin University and East China University of Science and Technology.

The State Key Laboratory of Chemical Engineering at Zhejiang University is located on its historic Yuquan Campus. Its faculty members (total of 19)include a MOST 973 Project Chief Scientist (Bo-geng LI), a National Thousand Talents Plan senior professor (Tao XIE), a MOE Chang Jiang professor (Bo-geng LI), five winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars (Bo-geng LI,Ying-wu LUO,Fei-he HUANG,Jin-dai WANG,and Tao XIE), a winner of the NSFC Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Peng-ju PAN), and two National Thousand Talents Plan junior professors (Hao BAI and Ying-ying LU). In addition, six faculty members (Bo-geng LI,Lian-fang FENG,Ying-wu LUO, Guo-rong SHAN,Yong-zhong BAO, and Jin-dai WANG) were supported by the MOE Program for New Century Excellent University Talents.

The research focuses for the Zhejiang branch is polymerization process engineering and polymer product engineering, which is subdivided into four areas:

(1) Heat/mass transfer and polymerization kinetics for highly viscous and/or heterogeneous systems; modeling, simulation, and optimization of polymerization processes; design and scale-up of polymerization reactors.

(2) High performance catalysts for coordination polymerization; living radical polymerization; multiphase and multi-component polymer in-reactor alloys; in-situ preparation of polymer nanocomposites; on-line detection and control of polymer structures.

(3) Green Polymerization processes, including bulk polymerization, melt polymerization, and gas phase polymerization; Polymerization technology for environmentally friendly polymers (bio-based/biodegradable polymers.)

(4) Design, synthesis, and structure-property correlation of polymeric materials;Preparation and application of multi-functional smart polymers; shape memory polymer, liquid crystalline elastomers, smart bio-polymers, biomimetic polymer systems, polymer nano-particles and capsules, polymer absorbents.

2. National Laboratory of Secondary Resources Chemical Engineering

The National Laboratory of Secondary Resources Chemical Engineering was established in the fall of 1990, which was approved by Ministry of Education and partially funded by the World Bank. Its aim is to promote fundamental research, technology development and education in extensive utilization of secondary resources, including renewable resources, wastes and/or by-products from industry. The whole laboratory is composed of a biological secondary-resource division and a chemical secondary-resource division, with strength in biochemical/natural products separation and purification, drug synthesis and large-scale chromatographic technologies.

The research interests are focused on separation and purification of renewable materials; green chemical engineering; biomass processing; waste reutilization. The center has an area of around 1000 m2 and is equipped with over 40 advanced instruments for material and process characterization, which is a unique research center in China devoted to R&D of reusable resources.

Currently 30 faculty and staff members are in place, including 15 professors and 17 associate professors.  More than 80 Ph. D. candidates and 120 master students work in the center. Moreover, over 70 patents and 10 national or provincial awards have been granted.

3. National and Local Joint Engineering Laboratory for Industrial Biocatalysis

Industrial biocatalysis is the main body of the new generation of industrial biotechnology. Industrial biocatalysis refers to science and technology to produce various chemicals with enzymes or biological organisms (whole cells, organelle, tissues) as catalysts. It is one of the most dynamic areas of modern research in chemical engineering science, which is also the important cross-disciplinary of biological science, chemistry science, engineering science and information science.

The National and Local Joint Engineering Laboratory for Industrial Biocatalysis is focusing on international frontier researches on industrial biocatalysis and facing the great demands of bio-based pharmaceutical, chemical engineering, and material industry of Zhejiang Province and the Yangzi river delta region. The laboratory will build a high level fundamental and applied research platform. By developing the fundamental and prospective technologies in industrial biocatalysis processes, the lab will gather and train young scientists, break through the technical bottleneck of typical biological products, build industry technological innovation service system of industrial biocatalysis, undertake national, local and industry research, development and engineering tasks, implement the application and industrialization of major scientific and technological achievements, and promote the transformation and upgrade of biology/pharmaceutical industries in Zhejiang province and the Yangtze river delta region. The main research will cover discovery and creation of biocatalyst, process engineering of biocatalysis, and the scale-up technology.

This lab has staff members including Prof. Li-rong YANG, Prof. Shan-jing YAO, Prof. You-qing SHEN, Prof. Dong-qiang LIN, Prof. Jian-ping LIN, Prof. Zhi-nan XU, and Prof. Hong-wei YU.
