The College of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Zhejiang University was founded in 1927 by Prof. Shou-heng LI, considered the pioneer of chemical engineering education in China. It was the first Chemical Engineering Department in the country and remained one of the best throughout its history.

The college comprises 6 institutes including the Institute of Chemical Engineering, UNILAB Research Center for Chemical Reaction Engineering, Institute of Polymer and Polymerization Engineering, Institute of Bioengineering, Institute of Pharmaceutical Engineering, and Institute of Industrial Ecology and Environment.

The college has a total of 105 faculty members including 70 professors with 1 CAE member, 31 associate professors, and 4 lecturers.

Between 2009 and 2020, CBE received 72 national or provincial awards including the National Award for Technological Invention and the National Award for Science and Technology Advances. In the same time frame, CBE received over 2600 research grants by various government agencies including the National Natural Science Foundation of China and Ministry of Science and Technology of China, with a annul research funding reaching RMB 159 million yuans. CBE published 270 SCI papers and 240 EI papers every year.

We are proud of our excellence in chemical engineering education. Over our 90 years, more than 20,000 students have graduated from the college. Our outstanding alumni include 19 members of Chinese Academy of Sciences/Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering and Royal Society of Canada, and 5 presidents of top Chinese research universities.

With our Truth Seeking spirit, we constantly aim to improve the quality of our scientific research, promote the commercialization of chemical technologies, and ultimately provide a great talent and technology to fuel the development of our nation’s economy.
