September,1937 | During Anti-Japanese War (World War II), College of Chemical Engineering along with the University began its eight-year migration and relocation (Long March of Intellectuals), which covered Jiande in Zhejiang Province, Taihe in Jiangxi Province, Yishan in Guangxi Province, Zunyi in Guizhou Province, and finally reached Meitan, Guizhou Province, lasting for two and half years. College of Chemical Engineering grew stronger during the period despite experiencing extreme difficulties. |
1941 | Approved by Ministry of Education of the National Government at that time, Institute of Chemical Engineering was established in College of Chemical Engineering at Zhejiang University, marking the first chemical engineering institute among Chinese colleges and universities. 1970 | Cryogenic Engineering was set up, and began to admit students in 1974. In 1978, it joined together Internal Combustion Engineering in College of Mechanical Engineering and Thermal Energy in College of Electrical Machinery to form College of Energy Engineering. |
1978 | First group of students was admitted after Cultural Revolution in 1977. There were six majors in the college, including Chemical Engineering, Petrochemical Engineering, Polymer Chemical Engineering, Silicate, Chemical Machinery, and Chemical Process Automation. The silicate program in the college along with Metallographic Thermal Treatment and Metallurgy in College of Mechanical Engineering and Semiconductor in College of Radio Electronics formed College of Materials Science and Engineering in August. College of Chemical Engineering resumed admission of graduate students for programs of Chemical Engineering, Chemical Machinery and Chemical Process Automation, and became the first college having authority to confer master degrees in chemical engineering in China. Over 20 professors and associate professors were appointed as graduate student supervisors. |

May,1998 | Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Medical University and Zhejiang Agricultural University were integrated with Zhejiang University. 2009 | College of Chemical and Biological Engineering separated from Faculty of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering. Prof. Qi-long REN was elected as eleventh College Chair. Faculty of Engineering at Zhejiang University was established, comprising College of Mechanical Engineering, College of Materials Science and Engineering, College of Energy Engineering, College of Electrical Engineering, College of Civil Engineering and Architecture, College of Chemical and Biological Engineering, School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and College of Polymer Science and Engineering. Prof. Bo-geng LI was elected as Dean of the faculty. Industrial Ecology and Environment Institute was set up in College of Chemical and Biological Engineering. Engineering Research Center for High Pressure Process Equipment and Safety (MOE) was established. The research team led by Prof. Qi-long REN was awarded Second Prize of National Technical Invention. Research expenditure of the college reached RMB 105.2758 million with 42.5% supported by government research funds. 2010 | Projects of “Scientific Issues in Manufacture, Processing and Application of High-performance Thermoplastic Elastomer” proposed by Prof. Bo-geng LI and “Scientific Foundation of the Bio-manufacture of Enantiotopic Chemicals” by Prof. Li-rong YANG were approved and supported by National 973 Program. Prof. Qi-long REN was appointed as Qiushi Distinguished Professor. Prof. Ke-ping YAN was the recipient of Provincial Hundred Talents Project. First International Academic Exchange Month in College of Chemical and Biological Engineering was held in May and June. A “2+2” joint undergraduate program in Chemical Engineering was established between Zhejiang University and the University of Western Ontario. Research expenditure of the college achieved RMB 105.472 million with 59% sponsored by government research funds. |
2011 | The groundbreaking ceremony of new chemical engineering building was held on May 21st in the west district of Zijingang Campus. This was made possible with the generous donation of 2 million USD by Mr. Yong-qian Tang. Our university leadership including Party Secretary De-shui Jin and Mr. Yong-qian Tang himself attended the ceremony. The Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Biomass Chemical Engineering at Zhejiang University was permitted to build. Prof. Ying-wu Luo won the National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars. Prof. Le-cheng Lei was appointed as Qiushi Distinguished Professor. Professor Wen-jun Wang and Jin-you Liang were recognized by the overseas high-level talent recruiting program of Zhejiang province. |
2012 | 1. Academic ranking In the academic assessment by the Ministry of Education in 2012, Chemical Engineering and Technology in Zhejiang University was ranked 5th in the nation, an improvement over previous ranking. 2. Faculty recognition (1) Prof Shi-ping Zhu was recognized as the Recruitment Program of Global Experts (short term). (2) Prof Jin-yang Zheng was elected as Cheung Kong Professors by the Ministry of Education. (3) Hua-bin Xing received National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars. (4) Prof Li-rong Yang and Jin-yang Zheng were elected as the subject experts for 863 program. (5) Prof Li Wang was elected as Qiushi Distinguished Professor. (6) Prof Li-rong Yang received National Award for Technical Invention (second tier). (7) The 2012 total research funding for the college reached 145 million RMB, which represents an increase of 23% over 2011 and ranks fourth amongst all colleges at Zhejiang University. 3. New post-doctoral discipline Bioengineering, which is associated with both Institute of Bioengineering and Institute of Pharmaceutical Engineering, was approved as a new post-doctoral hosting discipline. This brings our number of post-doctoral disciplines to two including Chemical Engineering and Technology. 4. Alumni activities Our alumni are actively involved in the development of the college of Chemical Engineering. In 2012, alumni groups returned for reunion for their 20th, 30th, 60th graduation anniversary, and the 50th, 61st, anniversary of enrollment. In particular, more than 400 alumni from all around the world came to Zhejiang University to celebrate their 30th graduation anniversary. They are from 15 classes of five programs including previous chemical engineering, chemical process automation, chemical engineering equipments, petroleum engineering and polymer engineering. Five alumni donated a total of 2.5 million RMB for the new chemical engineering building. This reunion has attracted great attention from the university. Former party secretary (Jun-sheng Zhang) and current party secretary (De-shui Jin) both attended the ceremony. |
2013 | 1. The management adjustment Following the arrangement of Zhejiang University, the general election of party and college office leadership groups, party committee, and the college general union was accomplished in 2013. The discipline inspection commission of the College of Chemical Engineering was established. 2. Significant progress in discipline construction and researching (1) The third stage construction of 985 Project, Resource Recycling and Macromolecular Product Engineering Research, passed the inspection. (2) The Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Biomass Chemical Engineering at Zhejiang University was established and passed the inspection from ministry of education. (3) National and Local Joint Engineering Laboratory for Industrial Biocatalysis was permitted to build. (4) The research funding to our college in 2013 is 132.36 million RMB. The funding has exceeded one hundred million for five consecutive years. 3. Remarkable achievements in talents construction (1) We have introduced 1 Recruitment Program of Global Expert: Tao Xie (2) Academician Li-an Hou and Ping-kai Ouyang from Chinese Academy of Engineering became Qiushi lecture professors of Zhejiang University. (3) Prof Li-rong Yang and Ying-wu Luo were elected as Qiushi Distinguished Professor. 4. Fruitful outcomes in teaching (1) Two courses were selected as the candidates of the second national high quality sharing lessons. Polymer Chemistry-- Bo-geng Li Chemical Engineering Design --Jia Wu (2) Bo-geng Li was elected as deputy director of Chemical Engineering Program Teaching Guidance Committee, Shan-jing Yao was elected as member of Biotechnology, Biological Engineering Program Teaching Guidance Committee. (3) College of Chemical Experimental Teaching Center was officially approved as a provincial experimental teaching demonstration center. (4) Chemical Engineering and Technology Program was approved by ministry of education to join the Outstanding Engineer Training Program. (5) Process Equipment and Control Engineering Program passed the evaluation of Engineering Education. 5. The improvement in safety management (1) Top Ten Lab of College appraisal work was launched. (2) Gas alarm and video security monitoring system is fully operational. 6. Colorful alumni activities (1) In 2013 there have been 10 alumni homecoming activities. (2) Education Fund of College of Chemical Engineering was established. (3) Jiangsu Branch of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Alumni of Zhejiang University was established. 7. 2014 2015 | 1. In September 2014, Zhejiang University renamed Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering to College of Chemical and Biological Engineering. 2. Expanding college/department autonomy reform program In May 2014, College of Chemical and Biological Engineering was approved by Zhejiang University Party Committee as the pilot college of expanding college/department autonomy reform program. 3. Completion of architectural design of new chemical engineering building In July 2014, the bidding on the architectural design project of new chemical engineering building in the weat district of Zijingang Campus was completed. Architectural Design and Research Institute of Zhejiang University won the bidding to complete the architectural design project. In November 2014, the architectural design was completed. 4. Evaluation on the State Key Laboratory The State Key Laboratory of Chemical Engineering that was founded by four universities including Zhejiang University passed the evaluation from Ministry of Science and Technology, and was rated as good. 5. The 106th meeting of West Lake Academic Forum of Zhejiang University,- some scientific issues in chemistry and chemical engineering interdisciplinary-fields strategic seminar was held. 6. Fruitful achievement in scientific research In 2004, the total research funding reached RMB 136.5345 million in which RMB 70.5174 million was from the government research funds and RMB 66.0171 million was from industries. The college won 9 National, provincial or ministerial level scientific research awards. 7. Introduction and cultivation of top talents (1) Professor Zhan LIN was introduced through the Recruitment Program of Global Youth Experts. (2) Prof. You-qing SHEN was elected as Cheung Kong Professors by the Ministry of Education. (3) Prof. Bo-geng LI was elected as excellent teacher of Zhejiang Province in 2014. (4) Prof. Li-rong YANG was elected as Top Expert of Zhejiang Province. 8. New measures for international exchange - Overseas top partner promotion program Overseas top partner promotion program was approved by Zhejiang University, which was mainly engaged in the communication and cooperation with the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Yale University. In July 2014, first batch of 5 students from UWM came to our college and completed 8 experiments on Principles of Chemical Engineering Experiment Course in 2 months, and UWM admitted the score. 9. Enforced efforts on the laboratory safety inspection Laboratory safety inspection system of College of Chemical and Biological engineering was completed. It ruled that the safety inspection on laboratory from the teachers will be held 5 times per year. Laboratory safety education activity (including fire drill and safety education and training ect.) will be arranged once per year. All the staff are required to participate in 3 activities. 1. Chemical engineering discipline was listed on Peak Discipline Construction Support Program Peak Discipline Construction Support Program was proposed by Zhejiang University to carry out Two Tops construction plans, implement six top university strategy and improve the content development capacity. Chemical engineering discipline was listed on Peak Discipline Construction Supprot Program. 2. After the generous donation of 2 million USD by Mr. Yong-qian TANG for constructing new chemical engineering building, Yong-qian TANG foundation promised to donate another 2.8 million USD. 3. In June 2015, Chemical Engineering and Technology discipline successfully passed the professional evaluation from China Engineering Education Professional Certification Association again. 4. In July 2015, 13 students from Brunei University who were admitted by College of Chemical and Biological Engineering graduated successfully. 5. The research funding to College of Chemical and Biological Engineering exceeded RMB 100 million for seven consecutive years. The research funding was RBM 115.92335 million in 2015, among them RMB 56.63829 million was from government reaseach funds and RMB 59.28505 million was from industries. 6. Introduction and cultivation of top talents (1) 3 young talents were introduced through Recruitment Program of Global Youth Experts: Hao BAI, Qing-gang HE and Ying-ying LU. (2) Prof. Jing-dai WANG won the National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars. (3) Jian-bin TANG and Xing-wang ZHANG received National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars. 7. Prof. Robert H. Grubbs, winner of the Nobel Prize in chemistry, academician of United States National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, was hired as honorary professor of Zhejiang University, and was invited to join Lecture Hall of Overseas Teachers of Zhejiang University . 8. In November 2015, Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology of University of Cambridge signed cooperation agreement with our college. 9. To celebrate the 118th anniversary of Zhejiang University, singing for qiushi, building the dream of China chorus competition was held. The chorus of College of Chemical and Biological Engineering won the second prize among 52 chorus teams. |
2019 | The faculty members who are joining the College in 2019 are Dr. Siyu Yao (Catalysis), Dr. Qi Sun (Catalysis), Dr. Xili Cui (Separation), Dr. Zhikan Yao (Membrane), Dr. Chengliang Xiao (Nuclear energy), and Dr. Qiwei Yang (separation). Prof. Qilong Ren has been elected as a member of Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). Prof. Qilong Ren has been elected as a Fellow of the Chemical Industry and Engineering Society of China. Prof. Yang Hou has been awarded 2019 National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. Prof. Yingying Lu was listed by the MIT Science and Technology Review as one of China's 35 Technology Innovations Person Under 35. Prof. Dangguo Cheng and Zongbi Bao won 2019 Debang Hou Outstanding Young Scholars Award. The ZJU CBE undergraduate team supervised by Prof. Mei Dou, Prof. Xiangqun Ye, and Prof. Chengxi Wang won the top prize in the 3rd National Chemical Engineering Final Competition for Undergraduate Students of China. The ZJU CBE undergraduate team supervised by Prof. Yongrong Yang etc. won the top prize in the 13th National Chemical Engineering Design Competition of China. The ZJU CBE undergraduate team supervised by Prof. Zuojun Wei won the first prize in the 9th National Pharmaceutical Engineering Design Final Competition for Undergraduate Students of China. 16 undergraduate students from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Colorado State University participated in the unit operation summer lab course in June and July. The employment rate for undergraduate students is over 98%, and for graduate students reaches 100%. The college was awarded 34 national scientific research grands, including 26 from National Natural Science Foundation of China and 8 from Ministry of Science and Technology of China. The total research funding reached around 300 million yuans. The ZJU CBE has established cooperative scientific research institutions with 5 local government and enterprises, providing RMB 800 million funds in few years. Including a framework agreement on long term scientific research strategic cooperation signed with Hengyi Petrochemical Co., Ltd. in 2018, it will be providing RMB 500 million yuans over five years. 107 patents have been granted in 2018.283 SCI-E and 239 EI papers has been published in 2018, including 1 paper published by Prof. Pingwei Liu in Nature Materials and 1 paper published by Prof. Youqing Shen in Nature Nanotechnology. |
2020 | Prof. Nigel K.H Slater (Qiushi Chair Professor, Fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering, UK), former Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge and former Head of Chemical Engineering Department at University of Cambridge, joined the College in 2020. The faculty members who have joined CBE in 2020 are Dr. Yiming MO(Electrosynthesis and Digital Chemical Engineering, Ph.D. MIT), Dr. XuanYANG (Biomass Materials, Ph.D. KTH), Dr. Haoran YU (Protein Engineering, Ph.D. UCL), Dr. Wei WANG (Biomaterials, Ph.D. Zhejiang University,Professor of Tianjin University), Dr. Kejun WU (Process Intensification, Ph.D. Zhejiang University, Assistant Professor of University of Leeds), Dr. Qinming WU (Catalysis, Ph.D. Zhejiang University), and Dr. ZehuaBAO (Synthetic Biology, Ph.D. UIUC). Prof. Qilong Ren was elected as the Vice-Chairman of Chemical Industry and Engineering Society of China. He also serves as an expert of Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific. Prof. Huabin XING (Head of the college) won the SCEJ Award for Outstanding Asian Researcher and Engineer and the 12nd Hou Debang Innovation Award. Prof. Yongrong YANG won China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Award for Federation the First Prize of Science and Technology Progress. Prof. Xingwang ZHANG, Prof. LechengLEI etc. won the CIESC Award for Second Prize of Basic Research Achievement. Prof. LiWANG won the 12nd Hou Debang Innovation Award and Xu Yuanzhi Award Funds of EPR Development for Contribution Award. He was also elected as a member of polyurethane products standardization working group of National Plastic Products Standardization Technical Committee. ZJU 100 Young Prof. YangHOU won the 12nd Hou Debang Outstanding Young Scholars together with Associate Prof. Zuwei LIAO. Prof. YangHOU was also elected as the fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry(FRSC) and the Highly Cited Researchers of Clarivate. ZJU 100 Young Prof. YingyingLU and Associate Prof. JieFU won the National Science Foundation for Outstanding Young Scholar of China. Prof. Yingying LU was also elected as a National Young and Middle Aged Scholars. ZJU 100 Young Prof. Zehua BAO, Qi SUN, Siyu YAO and Junjie ZHAO were elected as the National Young Scholars. Prof. TaoXIE was elected as the fellow of American Chemistry Society, Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering(PMSE Fellow). Undergraduate student WeihaoWang participated in the ZJU-China team and ANUT-ZJU-China team clinched double golds at 2020 iGEM Competition. The undergraduate team supervised by Prof. Binbo JIANG etc. won the top prize in the 14th National Chemical Engineering Design Competition of China. Graduate TingtingWANG won the Zhu Kezhen Scholarship, the top scholarship for students at Zhejiang University. Graduate QiyuYE etc. won the silver at the 6th Zhejiang College Students Internet + Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. Graduate JunchengWANG was awarded the 2019 Zhejiang Excellent Graduate Dissertations. Doctoral Quan ZHOU wasawarded the 2019 Zhejiang Excellent Doctoral Dissertations. Doctoral WeidongZHANG won the ZJU Award for Top 10 Students, the top award for students at Zhejiang University. The Graduate Student Group of the Institute of Polymer and Polymerization Engineering was awarded the Advanced Group of Post-90s Anti COVID-19. The study aboard rate(including virtual and in-person)of doctoral studentsreaches100%, and that of rate of the undergraduate students is over 100%. The employment rate for undergraduate students isover 98%, and for graduate students reaches 98%. Chemical Engineering and Technology was selected as a National First-Class Undergraduate Specialty Construction. The college was awarded over 30 national scientific research grands and over 70 enterprises cooperative projects. The total research funding reached around RMB180 million yuans. The college has established cooperative scientific research institutions with 5 local government and enterprises, providing RMB 800 million yuans funds in a few years. 119 invention patents have been granted, 270 SCI and nearly 300 EI papershave been published in 2019.
